Sometimes getting off the beaten path has its rewards. Of course, to do that you just have to take a side road here and there…. well there are side roads and then there is this:

The first time we saw this road we ended up not taking it, it had been a long day already and we decided to just head home for the day. Later we did some reading online and decided maybe we should have visited after all. A week or two later we returned with friends and took that road. When we got there, to be honest, the place kind of looked abandoned… but what the heck, we’re here right?

After a little searching we found Heinrich working on his latest batch of wine. He said he would be right with us, so we waited in the tasting room.

The first thing you are going to learn is that Heinrichshaus features dry wines only, and when we questioned Heinrich about why he did not make sweet wines, he simply stated “Because I like good wine.” It is probably a good time to mention that Heinrich is somewhere around 90 years old and still sharp as a tack.

A wine tasting with Heinrich is an experience in its own, on this day we sampled 5 of his wines and none of them disappointed. But it was not just the wine, it was the stories that came with each. He spins in tales of where he grew up in Germany, jokes that your grandfather would tell, and shares a small part of his vast knowledge of wine.

After our tasting we settled on a bottle of the Vignoles and sat out on the patio and enjoyed a glass of wine while being kept company by Jeffery the cat.

A few weeks later we returned and had the same wonderful experience and were even joined by Heinrich while enjoying a bottle of his Traminette. At some point we will come up with a way of rating our trips, but for now let us just call Heinrichshaus worthy of 5 stars.
